UAE Marks 10th Emirati Women’s Day, Celebrating 50 Years of Progress

The United Arab Emirates has celebrated the 10th anniversary of Emirati Women’s Day, celebrating the accomplishments and contributions of women in all facets of society. The anniversary celebration this year coincides with five years of advancement from the time Emirati women took on leadership roles in the country’s development.

A Decade of Recognition

The first time it was introduced in the year 2015 by Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the Mother of the Nation, Emirati Women’s Day has grown into an annual event to celebrate the strength, leadership and achievements of women across the UAE. In the last 10 years, the event has become a national celebration of women’s empowerment with a focus on women working in business, government and science, education as well as the arts.

The theme this year was “Inspiring Generations” which reflects the UAE’s determination to ensure that women’s successes continue to inspire future leaders.

50 Years of Progress

Since the UAE’s founding in 1971, Emirati women have played an important part in shaping the direction of the country. Since the country’s beginnings the leaders have encouraged women to take on higher education and career opportunities, and laid the groundwork for decades of progress.

  • Today, women account for over half of the graduates from universities within the UAE.
  • More than two-thirds of employees in the public sector are female, with a large number in senior positions.
  • In the government, women currently have 50percent of the seats within the Federal National Council, one of the highest proportions of female representation in parliament globally.

Government officials from across the Emirates shared her message and praised Emirati women for their part in establishing an economy based on knowledge and strengthening the global standing of the UAE.

A Global Example

International observers have frequently mentioned the UAE as a model of empowerment for women. It has been praised by the World Bank and the UN in advancing gender equality as well as being the home of innovative initiatives that help women scientists, entrepreneurs and innovators.

Looking Forward

As the UAE is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Emirati Women’s Day and over 50 years of advancement, leaders insist that the journey is not ending. Efforts are underway to expand opportunities in technology, space exploration, and sustainability–fields where women are expected to play a central role in shaping the nation’s next chapter.
